Opferaltar
Bollendorf
The so-called sacrificial altar, also known as Druidenstein, Heidenstein or Bärenstein, is a large sandstone block with an unusual shape reminiscent of a mushroom. It is located in the Niederburg area, the mountain plateau above Weilerbach Castle. The huge stone shows the typical weathering forms of Luxembourg sandstone and lies on a base of smaller boulders.
There is no evidence that the stone was carved by human hands or actually served as a sacrificial altar. Its size alone makes its use as an altar unlikely, and no offerings have been found in its vicinity. Perhaps the striking stone was attributed a special power in earlier times - no one can prove this.
The concrete support between the base and the stone is a testimony to its eventful history: After the 2nd World War, the "altar of sacrifice" was torn from its base and later lifted back into place.
The "Altar of Sacrifice" is located on nature park hiking trail no. 57 and can also be reached via the zigzag footpath from the Diana Monument near Weilerbach.
