Römisches Weihedenkmal
Ernzen
The Roman gods were apparently corruptible and the Romans promised rich gifts if they proved gracious. The wealthy Germanius presented the Gallo-Roman god of protection and fertility Intarabus with a precious monument. We no longer know why or what the building looked like at the time. Nor do we know whether Germanius had it rebuilt or simply restored. However, some parts of the architecture have survived and have been re-erected as copies.
Dedication monuments, especially of this quality, have rarely been found. Nor did it stand alone: traces of settlement from Roman times and a large number of graves prove that many people once lived here. Even the Celts settled here, and they were certainly not the first. Drive to the Roman villa in Holsthum and visit the Fraubillen cross, a prehistoric menhir that was reworked into a Christian cross. Nearby you will also find the secluded pilgrimage chapel "Schankweiler Klause".
